Our History

Keith R. Coles began his career in Halifax in 1958. The Coles Group is known as a pioneer within Nova Scotia’s business and professional community. Several generations on, The Coles Group continues to thrive by fostering specific financial advisory expertise to serve their clients’ needs.

The Coles Group is an umbrella company for our various teams. Each specialize in specific areas.

Keith Coles | Founder

Keith began his career in 1958.  Although semi-retired, Keith continues to provide consulting in life insurance and retirement planning. The Coles Group has evolved over the decades into a multi-generational family business, with sons Alan and David and grandson, Andrew, now in key roles of the group.

Keith championed The Coles Group mission; to provide secure and sound financial advice of all types under one roof.

Alan Coles | Group & Pension Plans

Alan started his insurance and benefits career in 1980, in Vancouver, moving back to Halifax two years later, to make The Coles Group Inc. a multi-generational firm. Specializing in Employee Benefits areas of:

  • Group Pension (Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution)
  • Group RRSP
  • Group Life/Disability/Health/Dental and Pre-Retirement Planning Seminars

Since 1994 he has delivered these seminars to local, national and international companies, running the gamut from privately-held to international publicly-held Fortunate 500 companies, to Government.

Stephen MacEachern | Life Insurance | Retirement

Stephen is Jeff’s successor. Specializing in providing consultation in;

David Coles | Insurance Broker

David started Coles Insurance Services Ltd. in 1984. His team consists of Susan Thorne, Darlene Thompson-Smeltzer and Andrew Coles. They specialize in Home, Auto, Motorcycle, Marine and Business Insurance.

David enjoys harness racing and hockey and has been involved in both for a number of years.

Andrew Coles | Insurance Broker

Andrew graduated Mount Saint Vincent University in May 2012, with a degree in Business Administration and has been fulltime with Coles Insurance ever since.

Stephanie | Administrator

Stephanie has a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Mary’s University. The first 20 years of her career were spent in managerial positions in the retail sector. In 2009, Stephanie joined The Coles Group. Her role in the team is administrative in nature, including but not limited to Life Insurance, Investments, Death Claims, Travel and Health Insurance.

In her spare time Stephanie enjoys raising money for various charities, baking and power walking.

Darlene | Insurance Broker

Darlene has a degree in Small Business Management from NSIT. Darlene has been in various managerial positions from the public sector to the Guiding/Scouting community. Darlene comes from a claims background and joined The Coles Group in 1994. Bringing with her the experience in client assistance with claims, processing policies, applications and overall client service expertise.

Darlene enjoys scrapbooking, baking and spending her time with her grandchildren.

Susan | Insurance Broker

Susan joined The Coles Group in 1992 after completing a two year accounting degree at NSCC. She has experience in both personal and commercial insurance lines. Susan is key to the daily operations of the group.

Outside of work, Susan enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons at hockey rinks and soccer fields across Nova Scotia.
